Today, Germany is the world’s third largest economy. But, there was a time when the country’s currency was a trash. In the early 1930s, Germany’s currency was the Mark. Due to inflation, the value of 1US dollar was 4210500000000 Mark. The situation was so bad that kids used to play it as placards. As a result, lakhs of people became bankrupt. This menace had played an important role in the rise of Hitler’s Nazi party.

After the First World War, inflation had gone up in Germany and from here, the country started witnessing an economic disaster. In 1914, the German government launched a new currency. Germany thought that the First World War would not continue for long, but the war went on for four years and the country slipped into economic disaster.

After the treaty of Versailles, Germany had to pay a heavy price for it. After the rise in currency supply, the inflation went up. Before the first world war, One US dollar was equivalent to 4 Marks but in 1920, Mark witnessed 16 times drop in comparison to US dollar.

The German currency remained stable for a few days at 69 Marks to one US dollar, but the government eventually printed more money. By July 1922, the value of the Mark had risen by 700%. The situation worsened when the government began printing banknotes in the millions and billions.

By November 1923, the value of one dollar had skyrocketed to 1 trillion Marks. The crisis reached such extremes that people had to carry sacks of Marks just to buy a newspaper. A student recalled those days, stating that he ordered a cup of coffee for 5,000 Marks, and just minutes later, its price rose to 7,000 Marks.”

Inflation paved the way for Hitler’s rise to power. In August 1924, Germany introduced a new currency, the Rentenmark, and the economy gradually stabilized. Today, Germany is the world’s third-largest economy, after the United States and China. It is also a member of the European Union, and its currency is the Euro.
