Japan Airlines announced on Thursday that it experienced a significant cyberattack, disrupting its operations and causing delays to several domestic and international flights. The attack also forced the airline to temporarily suspend ticket sales, impacting travelers planning to book new journeys.
In an official statement shared on X (formerly Twitter), the airline disclosed that a system failure occurred at 7:24 a.m. local time, affecting both its internal networks and external systems. The airline extended a formal apology for the inconvenience caused, emphasizing its commitment to resolving the issue swiftly to minimize further disruption to its passengers.
Approximately 30 minutes after the initial disruption, Japan Airlines provided an update, reporting progress in identifying and addressing the root cause of the problem. At 8:56 a.m. local time, the airline confirmed it had pinpointed the issue as originating from a malfunctioning router within its network. Immediate action was taken to mitigate the situation, including temporarily disabling the problematic router to restore system functionality.
As part of its response, the airline also announced the suspension of ticket sales for all domestic and international flights scheduled to depart on the same day.
