Bangladesh is awaiting a reply from India over the extradition of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, but India has not yet responded to its request.
Meanwhile, the foreign ministry of Bangladesh said that it has made a formal request of extradition of Sheikh Hasina and it is waiting for India’s reply on the issue. The ministry said that they will issue a ‘note of urgency’ if India will not respond.
However, Spokesperson of Bangladesh, Mohammed Rafiqul Alam has admitted that there is no definite timeline for extradition of Sheikh Hasina between India and Bangladesh. He said if India does not respond on the issue in an appropriate period of time, Bangladesh will take further steps to ensure Hasina’s extradition.
While addressing a press briefing, Alam stated that a diplomatic note had been sent on December 23. He added that, to his knowledge, India had not yet responded to the issue. Alam also mentioned that he would not comment further on the matter and preferred to wait for India’s response.
He further stated as there is no certain time limit for extradition and Bangladesh will wait for India’s reply. He said the country will wait for a certain period and then it will issue a ‘note of urgency’.
Amid protest against Alam’s statement over annexation of parts of India, Deputy press secretary of chief adviser, Apoorva Jehangir said that his Facebook post about India was his personal view and the interim government does not back any such post.
